Self motivation is basically the ability to get yourself to take action whether you feel like it or not. Many people have a challenge when it comes to motivation in general. It can be seen as being lazy or unproductive but in actuality, no one is really lazy. If you are not able to get yourself to do certain things that you know you should be doing, it's because you don't have a strong enough reason to do it.
Let me ask you this. Think about the most unmotivated person you know of. Most likely, you are picturing this person lying on the couch and not doing anything else. Most people would say this is a lazy person. However, there are no lazy people. There are only lazy actions. Let's say the couch sudden were to catch on fire, do you think that person would have the motivation to get off the couch? Of course. Why? Because he or she had a compelling enough reason to do so.
So what can you do to help increase your self motivation? One thing you can do is to start giving yourself stronger reasons to be doing certain things such as taking action towards your goals. A good place to start is to read those self help motivation books. You can get these at the library if you don't want to pay for them. Just go down to the personal development section and look at books on goal setting and motivation. A great book to start with is, "Awaken the Giant Within" by Anthony Robbins. You can also check out audio programs if you don't like reading all that much.
The point of reading and listening to these self improvement and motivation material is for you to become inspired. When you have a strong purpose to do things, you will be able to do it without much effort. It can be hard to get yourself to do what you don't want to do if there is no reason for you to do it. Do you think people who hate their jobs enjoy going there every day? Of course not. But why do they do it? What is their motivation? It could be that they don't want to be on the streets or they don't want to starve or see their children starve.
Once you have a goal and strong enough reasons to take action, your self motivation with automatically start to increase. Your reasons can be both positive and negative. You can either do something because you want to get satisfaction out of completing a task or you want to avoid the consequence of not completing the task. Either way, the reasons need to be strong enough to move you into action.
Starting out each morning by listening to self help motivational programs is a great way to start putting encouraging messages into your mind. Compare that to turning on the news and seeing how awful the world is. One will empower you and the other will make you unmotivated and even a little depressed.
The bottom line is that if you want to increase your self motivation, you will need to start designing a more compelling future for yourself. Come up with powerful reasons for why you should get off your butt and take action. When you have a strong purpose and constant feed your mind with self improvement motivation material, you will start to become more and more empowered and will begin to take more action.
